Mindfulness

Mindfulness is terminology that originated from Buddhist philosophy and the act of mindfully meditating. The religious tradition of mindfulness includes that the practitioner of mindfulness maintains a spirit of love, tenderness, loving kindness, wishing well for others, and compassion.
Mainstream culture and medical professionals promote mindfulness separate from
religion and spirituality. In the modern
culture, a nonsectarian approach is preferred
because people have divergent beliefs. Medicine is a science and therefore unbiased.
Marsha Linehan
the psychologist who created
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
is quoted as a
quote that very
elegantly explains the utility
of mindfulness, “The non-spiritual mindfulness works for
several reasons: it is exposure to yourself,
your thoughts, feelings, etc. You learn to be
less reactive to what’s going on...Mindfulness in that sense leads to more effective
behavior.” (Yapko, M. 2011)
There is empirical data that shows mindfulness is effective for managing all sorts of
problems, including sadness. Some people
find that they experience feelings of sadness
more when the seasons change. Having this
skill of mindfulness can be helpful to keep
your joy and self-control with you all the
time.
