Natural Awakenings Lehigh Valley

What to do for the Winter Blues when you Get S.A.D.

Chillier temperatures and leaves changing color are a beautiful time in the Northeast! Unless you’re a part of the population that also experiences a chillier mood and lower energy levels.

This change is often linked to seasonal depression, also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder or S.A.D., which is a type of depression that typically occurs during the fall and winter months and leads to symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep patterns, and a general sense of sadness or hopelessness.

Symptoms and Causes of S.A.D.

S.A.D. is often triggered by the lack of sunlight, which affects the body’s internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm, and the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that influences mood. The decrease in natural light during the winter can also disrupt melatonin levels, further contributing to sleep disturbances and mood disorders.

Emerging Therapies for S.A.D.

In recent years three non-invasive therapies are emerging as promising holistic solutions.

Red Light Therapy (1x - 3x /week)

Red Light Therapy involves exposing the skin to low-level wavelengths of red light, which stimulates cellular activity. Several studies have shown that red light therapy can help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety by enhancing mitochondrial function, increasing blood circulation, and boosting serotonin levels. A 2017 study published in BMC Psychiatry found that patients undergoing light therapy experienced a significant reduction in depressive symptoms, especially during the winter months of up to 36%.

Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (mHBOT) (1x - 5x /week)

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy involves breathing oxygen in a pressurized chamber, which allows the body to absorb more oxygen. Recent research has shown that HBOT can be particularly beneficial for individuals with brain injuries or cognitive decline, as well as those experiencing mood disorders like S.A.D. Studies have demonstrated that HBOT could reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety by improving oxygen flow to the brain and enhancing neuroplasticity, making it a viable option for combating seasonal depression.

Compression Therapy (1x - 3x / week)

Compression Therapy, typically used for improving circulation and reducing swelling, has been found to offer mental health benefits as well. By improving blood flow, compression therapy can help reduce muscle tension and increase feelings of relaxation, help manage stress, and improve energy levels.

By targeting the root causes of S.A.D. — disrupted circadian rhythms, reduced serotonin production, and poor circulation — these treatments provide a non-invasive and holistic approach to improving mental health and well-being during the long winter months.
