Task-Specific Exercises And Injury Recovery

Educating my patients on the impact performing therapeutic exercises has in the rehabilitation process is always of the utmost importance. I consider it vital to offer a thorough and clear understanding of the rationale behind all forms of treatment. Most people understand the general health benefits of maintaining a routine exercise program.

However, most don’t consider it to be a form of medication, but it offers many positive benefits to promote musculoskeletal health. From improving joint and cartilage integrity to desensitizing overly active nerves, it can be viewed as a holistic and natural form of pain relief. When designing a plan of care for each of my patients I always gather a clear understanding of what is truly important to each person. It can range from someone wanting to be able to keep up with their kids to being able to compete in a marathon. General exercises are important, but it is imperative to incorporate specific activities that simulate real-life activities outside of the clinic.

For instance, if someone is an electrician and is recovering from a low back strain we have to consider their specific job duties. Although we must improve the mobility of the lumbar spine and increase core stability, we have to take it a step further to reach full recovery. This means that exercises to stretch and strengthen the back must be completed in a variety of positions such as kneeling, prone (on the stomach), crawling, and more. Completion of task-specific exercises also reduces anxiety and increases one’s confidence to return back to full activity without restriction.
